How does Bowen therapy work?
Bowen Therapy is a holistic healing technique, starting with an initial assessment, then the session begins.
Movements: It involves a series of gentle rolling hand movements on precise points of the body, often over muscles, tendons, or ligaments. These movements stimluate the body's natural healing mechanisms.
Paues: After executing a few moves, the practitioner leaves the room which allows you to rest for a few minutes. These pauses are crucial as they give the body time to process the signals and begin the healing process. This sequence of moves and pauses is repeated throughout the session. Also breaks to allow the integration of the treatment to deeply affect the body, aiding in natural healing. Essentially, it's about naturally rebooting your nervous system.
What can I expect during a session?
During a session, you can expect a series of gentle, non-invasive movements and pauses, allowing your body to respond and begin the healing process. You will have a feeling of relaxation and calmness during the session.
The gentle nature of Bowen moves helps in reducing stress and promotes relaxation. This response helps shift the body from sympathetic (fight or flight) to the parasympathic (rest and digest) nevous system state, enhancing healing. Bowen is done over light, loose fitting clothing.
Is Bowen Therapy suitable for everyone?
Bowen is considered non-invasive and gentle making it suitable for people of all ages from infants with things like collic, right through to the elderly. It truly is an effective powerful therapy that can benefit everyone. While there are a few, very specific situations in which a particular "procedure" is contraindicated, Bowen is appropriate for people of all ages and in all degrees of health.
How long is a session and how many do I have to come for in a week?
A typical session lasts between 30 to 60 minutes, but the focus is truly on the results. This therapy isn't a single-session solution, yet it doesn't require numerous appointments each week. Appointments are spaced 5 to 7 days apart.
Chiropractors target joints, what does Bowen target in the body?
Bowen targets the entire body by restoring balance via the dual sided Autonomic Nervous System (ANS). The ANS controls over 80% of the bodily functions and is very susceptible to external stressors.
Many people today exist in a perpetual state of high stress and overstimulation, known as the fight-or-flight mode - the sympathetic side. Healing begins when the Autonomic Nervous System transitions from this state to the rest-and-digest mode - the parasympathetic side. Bowen therapy facilitates this shift. During a session, clients frequently experience deep relaxation or even fall asleep. These responses signal a significant release from stress and a movement towards healing.
I haven't heard about Bowen before, is this a new therapy?
Bowen was developed by Thomas (Tom) Ambrose Bowen, an osteopath from Geelong, Australia in the 1950s. So about 70 years...not particularly new, but it seems to be the worlds best kept secret. The Bowen Technique or Bowtech provides relief for many types of injuries and other health problems both accute and chronic, and it does so holistically via the body's innate healing mechanism.
I have a pretty acute injury can Bowen help?
So the short answer is yes, Bowen will help.
When faced with an acute injury, the practitioner will effectively apply the work to address only the traumatized area, since you as the client have had little time to compensate for, and accommodate to, the injury.
Once the trauma has been unravelled, Bowen can be effective help in your recovery.
I've had pain for years, like 10+, can Bowen help old pain like that?
We work with all types of clients who have acute, immediate injuries, as well as long term, chronic problems.
However, we mostly find ourselves working with clients whose conditions have developed gradually over many years and patterns of dysfunctional muscle recuitment and postures have become entrenched over time. In these cases we often take a 'whole-body' approach to faciltiate optimal alignment and recovery.
Meaning, instead of concentrating on a single issue (which we still can do), Bowen therapy addresses the whole body, aiding in restoring balance and allowing the body to heal from long-term ailments that have been problematic.
I've hit a plateau in my accident recovery, and I don't feel like I'm getting anywhere what can Bowen do exactly?
Bowen will flip you from the fight and flight mode to the rest and digest mode where all the healing happens. This shift or flip could explain in part, the common observation that Bowen sessions seem to reactivate the recovery process in situations where healing from trauma, sickness, or surgery has stalled or reached a plateau.
So what I do exactly is, I use moves that are gentle but purposeful that can be done through light clothing. Stimulating the nerve receptors and creating/recreating the healing pathways once again for recovery.
Between each set of moves, we pauses for as many minutes as are needed for the your body to begin responding as the nervous system begins to adjust the tension level in the muscles. Then the next moves are perfomed.
Swedish Massage is gentle and NOT with an RMT right?
Yes you're right!
Swedish massage is one of the most commonly offered massage techniques. It’s sometimes called a classic massage. The technique aims to promote relaxation by releasing muscle tension.
Swedish massage is gentler than deep tissue massage and better suited for people interested in relaxation and tension relief.
Swedish massage may loosen tight muscles caused by daily activities such as sitting at the computer or exercising. It can be very helpful for people who hold a lot of tension in their:
lower back, shoulders, or neck
Your massage therapist will use an oil or lotion to allow for smooth and long stokes. They may also ask if you have a preferred aromatherapy scent.
Please note: this service is provided by a Non-RMT and not available for insurance claims.
